‘I’ve never been one to splurge on merchandise belonging to my favourite bands or musicians. A couple of t-shirts and that’s probably it. Which is why I never bothered with the merch side of things during the early years of the project.
I’d like to think that since 2013, I’ve managed to produce these EPs/Albums without having to rely on cashflow being from the creation of merchandise. And that’s the way I intend for it to be moving forward.
So why in 2023 have I now chosen to introduce merchandise?
If you’ve been keeping _________ with this journal, you will know by now that this project is not a career. And furthermore, this is not a vessel for me to pay off any bills or loans.
I think its fair to say that the majority of today’s bands or musicians produce merchandise in order further market and promote their musical brand or aesthetic. I would like to adopt the same marketing strategy when it comes to the CHANGELINGS merch store. However, I’m sure there will be patrons who will favour one CHANGELINGS release over another.
Now here’s the real question - does the money actually get donated?
Well, one has to consider the time and effort that is being put into the CHANGELINGS merch store.
If CHANGELINGS was indeed my only source of income:
I myself probably would spend more time and effort marketing and promoting the merchandise without having to employ someone else to do it for me.
I don’t think the project would be going out of its way to obtain a letter of statement from certain charity organisations.
Rather than spending money on graphic designers, merch production & shipping, as well as a separate merch website, I would most likelydirect all that money into making making more music.
The creation of CHANGELINGS merchandise would’ve been introduced way back in 2016, had I thought that this project was going to be an legitimate career or occupation.
To put it simply, the CHANGELINGS merch store was created to act as an extension or subsidiary of the project.
